Past[]
As the War Devil, Yoru has been around ever since the concept of war itself. One day, they alongside a group of Devils called the Four Horse men tried to fight the powerful Chainsaw Man. The fight ended up with all parties getting gravely injured. Yoru had several of their body parts eaten by the Chainsaw Man, causing humanity's fear of war to decline considerably, with Chainsaw Man himself vanishing to parts unknown.
Justice Devil Arc[]
Unexpectedly, the War Devil, who has the form of an owl, shows up at Asa's death scene and asks her if she wants to live and forms a contract with her in exchange for her body. After assimilating her body, it causes her to be revived as the War Fiend. The War Devil, now a fiend, awakens and rips Mr. Tanaka's head and spine off using her newfound powers, turning it into a sword. She then attacks the Class Rep with it, severing one of her arms. She then turns the arm into a grenade and throws the head of Mr. Tanaka into the Devil's face, making them both kiss before blowing both of them up with a grenade.
After killing both individuals, the War Devil starts her quest to find and kill the Chainsaw Man. A day later, Asa awakens in her bed realizing that she had died, but the War Devil shows herself and explains that she had kept her alive with half her brain. Asa is forced to comply with the War Devil, otherwise she will take over her body and kill her. However, Asa has a panic attack before arriving at the school, refusing to go in even under the threat of death. The War Devil argues with her, but she's cut off by the arrival of Yoshida. The War Devil questions him on whether Chainsaw Man goes to their school before asking him to be her boyfriend, to which he refuses. Asa gets flustered at this, but the War Devil explains the nature of her powers to her. The War Devil, believing that Chainsaw Man is a member of the school's Devil Hunter club, coerces Asa into joining. To the latter's dismay, she is partnered with the aforementioned Yoshida and another girl known as Yuko.
When Asa has a panic attack at remembering what happened to Bucky, she decides to leave early before finding that other students vandalized her locker with raw meat. The War Devil in a rare moment of concern offers to do something about it (Although it's implied that she means killing them). Asa is then approached by Yuko. The two become friends, at which point Yuko gives Asa a pair of shoes. the War Devil suggests selling them, at which point Asa calls her an idiot.
The next day, Asa and Yuko hang out after school. When Yuko goes to the bathroom, the War Devil suggests killing Yuko and turning her body into a weapon. Asa and the devil break out into an argument, during which Asa calls the War Devil out for referring to her as "girl" instead of as her name. In response, War Devil calls Asa out for not using her name either, to which Asa says that using "War Devil" is weird and awkward. The War Devil decides to postpone the issue on Yuko until later. Thinking over what Asa said about her name, the War Devil suggests the nickname "Yoru" as an alternative, which Asa accepts.
After Yuko returns, she and Asa continue going around the city to look for Devils. However, they quickly find themselves in serious danger when they stumble onto the Bat Devil eating a bystander. The War Devil, or rather Yoru, then tells Asa two important pieces of information. First, she is unable to beat the Bat Devil in her current state. Second, she can't take control of the body when Asa is stricken with fear. She tells Asa to talk away from the Bat Devil slowly, but in their panic she and Yuko break out into a sprint, alerting the Bat Devil.
In the chase, Yuko's leg is pierced by a piece of debris, knocking her down. Yoru then attempts to convince Asa to kill Yuko and turn her body into a weapon, telling her that Yuko is about to get killed anyway. Asa still hesitates, to which Yoru then reminds Asa of what happened with Bucky. As Yoru can read Asa's thoughts, she tells Asa that she doesn't feel guilty for killing Bucky, but rather that she was seen killing Bucky. Since no one was around, Asa could kill Yuko and no one would know a thing. Asa seemingly reaches for the hatchet, only to immediately pick up Yuko and launch into a sprint. But, as had happened time and time again with Asa, she falls down face-first. Right before Bat can kill Asa, however, it's crushed by the co*ckroach Devil, who Chainsaw Man was in the middle of combat with.
When she and Asa return home, Yoru throws a tantrum over being saved by her supposed archnemesis. Asa, who is trying to sleep, tells Yoru to shut up and then asks her why she has a grudge against Chainsaw Man to begin with. Yoru tells Asa that she and Chainsaw Man had fought each other long ago. According to Yoru, she had managed to kill him multiple times, but Chainsaw Man kept getting back up and eventually managed to eat parts of her body, weakening her considerably. Because of Yoru's weakened powers, mankind has not faced a single war since the World War, with war now being a thing of movies and videogames. Asa questions if Yoru's scared of being forgotten, only to realize that Yoru fell asleep.
The next day, Asa is approached by Yoshida, who attempts to set her up with Denji, who unbeknownst to either Asa or Yoru is Chainsaw Man's true identity. Asa and Denji quickly find themselves bickering about Chainsaw Man, where Asa criticizes him only for Denji to come to his defense. When Asa angrily questions Denji about why he thinks he knows so much about Chainsaw Man, Denji proudly admits that he is Chainsaw Man's secret identity. Asa, dismissing Denji as a pathetic fanboy, calls him a loser and walks away.
Yoru, believing Denji's words at face value, yells at Asa for walking away. Asa tells Yoru that she's stupid, reasoning that Chainsaw Man wouldn't openly out himself like that. Yoru repeatedly yells that she isn't stupid until Asa backs back her insult. Yoru then tries to get Asa to go hunting for Devils to get into the Devil Hunter club, but Asa declines as she's going to visit Yuko. Yoru threatens her again, but Asa doesn't really care and tells Yoru to think of something if she's the smart one. Asa then brings up the idea of luring a devil to school, as that would bring Chainsaw Man out, which Yoru takes into consideration as a good idea.
When it is revealed Yuko made a contract with the Justice Devil and is going to attack the school tomorrow, Yoru sees it as an opportunity to lure out Chainsaw Man by battling Yuko at the school. When Asa protests, Yoru possesses her and won't give her body back until Yuko is dead. She takes the katana Asa received from the devil hunters club and meets Yuko in the school hallway the following morning. Yuko reads Yoru's mind and tries to convince her to let her kill Asa's bullies and they can fight afterwards, but Yoru isn't falling for it. When Yuko claims that Yoru can't beat her anyway, Yoru gleefully reminds Yuko that if she were to kill her, Asa would die too. Yuko admits she likes Asa, but dispises Yoru and transforms into a devil form to battle Yoru.
Yoru and Yuko fight fiercely, causing countless casualties in the process. Eventually, Yoru realizes that she can't beat Yuko and decides to leave the fight to Asa. When Asa uses her school uniform to create a sword, Yoru initially calls her weapon 'weak', but after Yuko is instantly cut to pieces with it, she calls it 'strong'.
After Yuko is revived by an unknown woman and Asa wakes up, Yoru immediately takes control of the body and confronts Chainsaw Man directly. She attempts to attack him but Denji is taken by the Octopus Devil out of sight. Believing he left because he saw her as weak, Yoru angrily exclaims for Chainsaw Man to show himself, as she will obliterate him the next time they meet.
Dating Denji Arc[]
The next day, Asa and Yoru head back to the school to recover the Super-Strong Uniform Sword, only to discover it was shattered during the battle. The pair are greeted by the Devil Hunters club, who inform Asa that they accept her into their ranks. Yoru takes over and asks if Chainsaw Man is among them. Sure enough, the student council president of the club pulls up his shirt and reveal a rip-cord sticking out of his chest, insinuating he is Chainsaw Man. After Yoru and Asa depart, Asa questions why Yoru didn't kill him then and there. Yoru admits that she needs a strong weapon to fight Chainsaw Man, and orders Asa to make a weapon even stronger than her Super-Strong Uniform Sword. Asa is irritated, but resolves to help Yoru defeat Chainsaw Man so Yoru will leave her body; and she is even willing to weaponize a person if necessary.
Yoru suggests that the powerful weapon they need lies between the lines at which Asa is willing to kill, and the point at which she refuses to kill; something akin to being between a cat and a criminal. Asa spots Denji picking up cigarette butts and recycling them into new cigarettes to sell to homeless people. Asa realizes Denji is between a cat and a criminal; someone who isn't bad enough to deserve death, but someone she is willing to kill as a necessary evil to defeat Chainsaw Man. Asa works up the courage to ask Denji out on a date, to which he reluctantly says "yes".
Asa and Denji's date to the aquarium goes poorly. Asa bores Denji with long-winded lectures on aquatic life, causing Denji to storm off. Yoru tells Asa to go after him, but she refuses, insisting she didn't do anything wrong. Suddenly, the girl who revived Yuko shows up at the aquarium. She introduces herself as Yoru's big sister the Famine Devil or "Fami". She agrees with Asa but elaborates that the true problem is that deep-down Asa cannot turn Denji into a weapon because she knows it is the wrong thing to do. Yoru, upon recognizing Fami asks Asa not to listen to her, but Fami snaps her fingers and transports Yoru "outside". She says that any human can abandon their morality when they are starving, and will create the right stage for Asa to turn Denji into a weapon. Denji returns and Asa realizes that the aquarium has been transformed into one long repeating hallway, with no sign of an exit.
After Asa destroys the aquarium by purchasing it and turning it into a weapon, Yoru is once again able to possess Asa. Yoru battles the Eternity Devil who has nowhere to hide after the building was destroyed, and kills him instantly with the power of the Aquarium Spear. After the battle, Denji walks Asa home and asks her to go on another date with him. Asa smiles and agrees to the date. Yoru comments on Asa's affection for Denji, which Yoru is able to feel due to sharing a brain with Asa. Despite this, Yoru decides to proceed with the plan and possesses Asa, touches Denji's head, and calls out "Denji Spinal Cord Sword."
Yoru fails to turn Denji into a weapon, while Denji interprets her actions as a farewell and does the same, touching Asa's head and saying: "Asa Spinal Cord Sword" before leaving. Yoru is puzzled by this, and Asa says that it must have been because he does not like her. Yoru tells Asa that their goal now is to take their time winning Denji's heart while also searching for Chainsaw Man. Asa questions her about Fami, but Yoru warns her to stay away from Fami before falling asleep.
For Asa and Denji's second date, they go to his home to watch movies. Yoru takes control of Asa's body and pounces on Denji, kissing him and once again attempting to turn him into a weapon. Suddenly Nayuta comes home from walking the dogs, calls Yoru a thief for kissing Denji, and links one of her chains through Yoru's skull. Using her powers, Nayuta has Asa and Yoru think they are a dog; and only agrees to turn her back if Denji stops being friendly with her. Denji reluctantly agrees, and Naytua erases Asa and Yoru's memories to make them think Denji stood them up. Back at the school, Asa tries to convince herself she is glad Denji stood her up but ultimately admits she is upset by it. Just then, Yoshida shows up and asks if Asa will keep him company.
Falling Devil Arc[]
After Asa get's her feelings hurt by Yoshida, the two head back home. Asa falls into a depressed state and begins to break down. Yoru tries comforting her saying she's a bit too harsh on herself, without much effect. Asa ponders if she'd be better of dead (probably due to the Falling Devils power). Soon after a body falls next to them. Yoru swiftly takes over before Asa could get scared and tells her to stay back as "something's wrong". Yoru looks up to see dozens of people standing in their balconies staring down at her. They all begin to throw themselves to their deaths forming a huge pile of corpses in front of a very confused Yoru.
She summons a "Ruler Sword" and takes a stance as a mangled figure emerges from the pile of corpses. In response, Yoru drops her bag and runs away claiming she cannot possibly win this fight. While the figure reveals itself to be the Falling Devil, Yoru attempts to communicate with the now unresponsive Asa. She admits only Asa can create strong weapons and needs her to snap out of it.
Asa wakes up screaming in fear due to reliving a traumatic memory which removes the control of the body from Yoru. She finds herself falling upside down due to the Falling Devil's power, but grabs onto a railing before she could fall. Unable to take back control, Yoru tells Asa not to be afraid.
Asa continues having traumatic flashbacks. The force of the anti-gravity get's too strong and she loses her grip on the railing. While falling, Yoru instructs her to shout: "Nail Knife." Asa does so, and her fingernail rips itself off and transforms into a knife. The pain makes Asa forget about fear which lets Yoru regain control. She falls back to the ground as the gravity manipulation does not affect her. Yoru orders Asa to keep focusing on her pain and proceeds to speculate about the devil's identity before correctly assuming that it is the Falling Devil and that Fami's likely involved.
Yoru notices Asa's having a flashback again, so she promptly cuts her hand, believing it'll keep Asa from getting scared. Much to Yoru's surprise, this has the opposite effect, and Asa becomes afraid of Yoru instead. Before she loses control, she dashes under a building so as to not fall into Hell when gravity reverses on Asa.
The two then clash with each other, with Yoru being frustrated at Asa for not trusting her, while Asa retorts that she has no reason to as they don't even know each other, how Yoru always says disturbing stuff, takes over her body whenever and cuts her hand just now. Yoru tries to change the topic by blaming Asa's negative feelings on the Falling Devils' power. Frustrated at Yoru's lack of care and understanding, Asa responds by saying that since Yoru can read her mind, she should know what she's afraid of. Asa breaks down and explains that it's solitude and companionship. While she has trust issues, Asa gets lonely but fears how something always goes wrong when she tries to approach people and ends up alone all over again. Yoru seems at a loss for words.
Meanwhile the Falling Devil announces she plans to kill and serve both of them as her main course dish. Some time passes, with Asa and Yoru staying put until the Falling Devil finally arrives and prepares to kill them. The Falling Devil grabs Asa and reinforces her suicidal thoughts while Yoru is helpless to do anything and resorts to screaming in panic. She can do nothing as she witnesses Asa letting go, dooming both of them to be killed in Hell, though they are once again saved by Chainsaw Man.
Despite Denji's efforts, Asa and Yoru are taken to Hell, but they manage to escape thanks to the appearance of a Chainsaw Man doppelgänger. Brought back to Earth, Yoru sees the injured Chainsaw Man lying on the ground and tries to convince Asa into killing him. To her great anger, Asa does not listen as she cuts her hand and heals Chainsaw Man, asking him to save her.
Current arc[]
When Asa and Yoru return from the hospital, the two of them bicker over Asa's newfound feelings for Chainsaw Man. In the middle of their argument, Fami appears in their apartment and asks if she can eat a loaf of their bread. Fami approaches Asa and Yoru with an offer. If they become a celebrity devil hunter affiliated with the Chainsaw Man Church, the public will stop paying attention to Chainsaw Man, weakening his power. If he gets weak enough, the Chainsaw Devil will (supposedly) split off from the human it's contracted to, allowing Asa and Yoru to fight the Chainsaw Devil while sparing the contracted human. While neither Asa nor Yoru trust Fami, they both reluctantly agree to the offer, with Asa wanting to save Chainsaw Man and Yoru wanting to kill him.
After a month, Asa and Yoru have become massive celebrities thanks to the media, with many in the public theorizing that all of Chainsaw Man's kills were actually performed by Asa. The two of them are later seen watching themselves on the news. Yoru admits that she loves all the attention she and Asa are receiving. While Asa attempts to deny it, she clearly feels the same way about it as Yoru.
Denji is abducted by the government, and within a secret facility, is completely dismembered so that they can study his pieces, with the intention of permanently killing Chainsaw Man or finding a way to replicate his powers. Asa and Yoru lead an infiltration team to rescue Denji, freeing other prisoners along the way; they convince Katana Man to help since he wants to kill Chainsaw Man, but can't be satisfied with erasing his pieces, as like Yoru, he wants to kill Chainsaw Man in his prime.
Asa, Yoru, Fami, and allies manage to rescue Denji, reassembling his pieces to restore his body. Yoru demands a fight, but Denji is reluctant since he is afraid of losing again; he is also wrestling with self-disgust as despite his acknowledgment that he should focus on protecting Nayuta, he confesses that wants to be Chainsaw Man instead of his human self and all he wants is sex. One of the group offers to take him to a soap land, which Yoru doesn't believe he'll accept, but he seriously considers it. Fed up, Yoru determines that Denji's dick is his problem.
Yoru takes Denji into an alley, holding a knife to emasculate him; Denji shows limited resistance because he thinks she is bluffing. However, when she shoves a hand down his pants to grab his genitals, he panically knocks the blade away. Frustrated, Yoru demands to know if simply crushing his testicl*s would focus him, but when she puts her face close to his, Asa's memory of kissing with him bleeds into her mind. Yoru ponders if they had kissed themselves, then initiates a sloppy make out session with Denji. When they stop, Yoru removes her hand from his privates, revealing that their kiss made Denji ejacul*te, with her hand covered in sem*n.
